Public Key Infrastructure Use Cases

Protecting your company against cyber threats is not only a way to prevent loss but also a way to honour the trust that your customers and other stakeholders have placed in you.

Last week, we looked at why Public Key Infrastructure is important for organisations, today we will look at several use cases where Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) could be leveraged to establish trust in your daily business activities.

The financial sector has many use cases where PKI can secure and protect digital assets of the organization.

First use case, each customer is issued with a digital certificate on their mobile device. The digital certificate is used to control access to the client’s online banking accounts.

Secondly, digital certificates can be used to digitally sign high trust transactions. The digital signatures will ensure the integrity of the transaction and the time of transaction. Furthermore, the digital signature will provide non-repudiation, making it hard for the signer to deny signing the transaction after the fact.

SSL certificates can help banks and other financial sector organisations to not only secure their website but internal communication between servers. By using digital certificates to secure machine identities, banks can ensure that only trusted machines can gain access to sensitive data and services.

Just like financial institutions, governments around the world are relying on PKI for trust and security.

Some of the many applications in government includes national ID programs, single sign-on applications, encrypted emails, digital signing and identifying citizens for online applications such as taxpaying.

The health sector is an example of a heavy regulated industry that is reaping the benefits of PKI.

Patient’s records are highly confidential and access to the data is heavily protected. PKI does not only help to protect patients’ data at rest but also in motion.

Recently in South Africa, electronic prescription have become acceptable. Doctors can digitally sign their scripts with an Advanced Electronic signature that will then be automatically shared with a pharmacy.

Although it is clear that the benefits of PKI are multitude for the above-mentioned sectors, small to medium enterprises can also benefit from PKI. To find out how PKI can help your organisation, large or small, do not hesitate to contact LAWtrust to find out more.
