Phishing is one of cybercriminal’s most popular techniques to attack unsuspecting victims. It is easy and can be deployed on a massive scale. To protect yourself against phishing, it is important that you are aware of the latest phishing techniques.

In a review of thousands of phishing emails, researchers found the 10 most popular email subject lines used in phishing attacks:

  • Password Check Required Immediately
  • Touch base on meeting next week
  • Vacation Policy Update
  • COVID-19 Remote Work Policy Update
  • Important: Dress Code Changes
  • Scheduled Server Maintenance -- No Internet Access
  • De-activation of [[email]] in process
  • Please review the leave law requirements
  • You have been added to a team in Microsoft Teams
  • Company Policy Notification: COVID-19 - Test & Trace Guidelines

Looking at these subject lines it is clear that cybercriminals are focusing on these three areas:

  1. People’s concern about their health stemming from the COVID pandemic.
  2. To cope with the number of people that started working from home, many organisations quickly rolled out solutions that users are not familiar with.
  3. During the pandemic, online commerce has been booming as people turned to online forms of entertainment and keeping in touch with their family, friends and colleagues.

Stay safe and be #CyberSmart!
